Brief Recent History

Whilst studying at the Royal College of Art (1992 - 94), I made a number of painting trips to St. Ives. Even though I studied textile design, painting was always of great importance to me, in itself, and as a source of inspiration for my designs. For the first couple of years after graduating, I worked as a free-lanc designer but continued making painting trips to St. Ives.

Being pleasantly surprised by the reception that my work was beginning to have and feeling uninspired with living in London, I moved to St. Ives in November 1997.This marked the beginning of an unexpected change in the direction of my career. I felt I could spend less time on design work and more on painting. It wasn't long before I found myself in a postition of being able to concentrate solely on painting.

This was an excitiing period and I worked steadily for a few years. Then in October 2002, Ben and I had our first child, Sunny and not too much longer, in may 2004, our second boy Asa, arrived on the scene. For various reasons, during this time, I had a complete break from painting, for at least three years. At the time I didn't feel I was missing it, but having been able to start again, I've realised what a big part of me it is. It actually feels enourmously refreshing to have had the break and I'm now working with renewed passion and vigour!

Thoughts on Painting

To begin with, I enjoyed working directly from life, be it from a cliff top or in amongst the boats in the harbour. Thus being able to make an immediate response to the surroundings which, I felt, maintained a certain freshness to the work.

The challenge for me is to capture the beauty of the sea and surroundings, as well as creating work that are individual, fresh, alive and considered in terms of form, colour and space.

Ten years on from first discovering St.Ives. I am just as captivated by it, but I'm beginning to spend more time working from ideas in the studio(i.e. our ex-dining room!). I'm almost finding that I can work more freely and be more experimental this way. I will always continue to work directly from life, but feel studio work is adding an interesting dimension to my work as a whole. Also, as well as St.Ives, I've started to concentrate ona few other coastal areas, in particular, The Camel Estuary and the Scilly Isles.
